Becoming a winning football player takes a lot of teamwork, practice and effort. But it all comes together on game-day. Hopefully, your efforts pay off with a winning game and lots of fans cheering in the stands. If you are looking to improve your game, then pout the tips below into your practice.

A good football tip is to always stay low if you’re on the offensive or defensive line. Staying low helps you stay grounded and gives you a better position to block or rush the other player. It also makes it much harder for you to get knocked onto your back.

A great football tip is to practice your routes as much as you possibly can if you’re a receiver. Knowing your routes like the back of your hand will make things go much more smooth in an actual game. You will make fewer mistakes and the play will be more successful.

If you play a defensive position such as a linebacker or defensive lineman, learn to tip the ball away from the receiver. The best way to learn this is by watching film of successful tips and practicing with your teammates. When the ball is thrown, look at its trajectory and run toward where it will land. Then, jump and smack at the ball as it passes above you.

Watch old tapes of the greats, so you can get pointers. Watch professional players who play your position, so you can watch how they move and play the game. This is almost as helpful as having them there with you, because you can study every move they make during a game.

Learn the proper technique for catching a football. The best receivers know that the quicker they can grab the ball, the less likely the defense will get it. To catch a ball extend your arms and reach for the ball as it gets close to you. Then tuck the ball to help avoid fumbling the football.

Consume adequate amounts of protein to give you the strength and body mass you need as a football player. Avoid getting your proteins through junk food, as this will contribute to an unhealthy body that does not function well for you. Get protein from meat, eggs, fish and protein powder shakes.

If you want to improve hip flexibility, place five cones about five yards apart all in a line. Start down by one side of your cones and make a zigzag pattern, running between each set at maximum speed. Lean into the turn, and keep your head up while looking down the field.

Never take the field without a helmet. Each season, your helmet should be inspected thoroughly. The plastic shell should not have any cracks in it and the padding must be in good condition. It should also have a face mask that properly attaches to the helmet and a chin strap that fastens securely. All this is to be sure to prevent head injuries during play.

If you are a quarterback, it is important to tweak your throwing mechanics. This is done by learning proper footwork. When throwing the ball make sure that the toe of the foot opposite of your passing arm is pointed toward your receiver. Line your hips and chest toward your intended target and keep your arm close to your helmet. As you release the ball allow your arm to continue its intended path downwards.

If you are running with the football, cradle it close to your body. Players on the other team will try to strip the football away from you to force a fumble. If the ball is away from your body, it is much easier for the opposing team to make a play on the ball.

Take a break from football once in a while. Don’t let the sport completely control your life. Enjoy the time away when necessary. Not only that, but a break from the game can give you perspective, and allow you return with fresh enthusiasm.

Remember to train mentally and physically. You need to picture in your mind how you will go about performing in the game. Studies prove that if you practice in your mind, you can really improve your game. See yourself talking a player or catching the ball, and you just might do it for real.

When you are playing quarterback, make sure that you scan the defenders multiple times. Quarterbacks need to make sure to scan right to left as well because many forget. When you alter these scan patterns the defense must stay alert and this also helps to prevent being sacked repeatedly.

Don’t try to turn every down into a big play or a scoring opportunity. Think of football as a game that moves ten yards at a time. When you try to make a big move every time you have the ball in your hands, you will leave your team open to turnovers.

Reach out to help your teammates. You may play a different position than they do, but you can still offer support. If you see someone having trouble, offer to run drills with him, for example. It may be that they need help off the field. Look for ways to be helpful and that will build teamwork.

If you can change direction quickly and without the opposition knowing where you’ll go next, you’ll be a master at football. If the offense doesn’t know you’re headed for them or the ball, or the defense expects you to go right when you go left, you’ll own the game and they’ll come out losers.

As you know, football players put so much heart into the game. They give it everything they have and spend countless hours perfecting their skills. If you are a football player who is looking to improve your game skills, then use the tips from above and help your team have a winning season.
